Crisis in NTPC Korba



Korba, September 20, 2011: Crisis hit the NTPC plant in Korba of Chhattisgarh state after a portion of the ash pond collapsed virtually bringing the power production to a halt.

Out of 2600 MW, the NTPC Korba could only produce only 200 MW power because of collapse of the ash pond, admitted General Manager of NTPC Korba S K Ray.

Due to heavy rainfall on September 8, last about 30 metre of the ash pond dam located at Dhanras village washed away, because of which power production in three units of 500 MW had to be stopped, he said.

On last Sunday 500 MW 6th unit and two units of 200 MW had to be shut down.

The generator transformer of the 7th unit had also developed snag and the plant was only producing a meager 200 MW, he said.

Besides Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Dadar and Nagar Haveli of the Western grid were drawing power from the NTPC Korba.

Officials said they have sought the services of the experts to back it into functional condition.
