Rs 20,000 Cr NTPC power plant in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, July 12, 2009: National Thermal Power Corporation Limited and Chhattisgarh Government today inked an MoU for setting up of a power plant in Lara village of Raigarh District in the state.

In the Presence of Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh and Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, officials from both the Centre and the State inked MoUs for an International Institute for Information Technology and also for an Industrial Training Institute at Baloud in Janjgir-Champa District.

The Power Plant at Lara would have five units of 800 MW each and would cost Rs 20,000 crore to the Central PSU for which Principal Secretary Power of Chhattisgarh D S Mishra and NTPC Chairman cum Managing Director R S Sharma signed the MoU.

The Chief Minister said the 500 MW Bhilai Power Plant, which was earlier in the day dedicated to the nation by Shinde, was a great achievement of Chhattisgarh and once the 4000 MW Lara project is completed it would definitely help the nation in meeting its power supply demand.

He also stressed for employment to the locals in the power project.

Chhattisgarh in the coming years would be able to produce 4500 MW of power, said Shinde adding the Lara project would help in building the nation.

The Centre has decided to provide power to every household by 2012 and against the target of 1.17 lakh villages, about 62,000 villages have been electrified so far, the Union Minister said.

He also assured the people of the state that the NTPC plant would be environment friendly and also the Government would take every step in rehabilitation of the project affected people.
