Raipur, October 28, 2025: Chhattisgarh Government has made it mandatory for issuance of every birth and death certificate online in the state.

Officials stated that the Office of the Registrar General of India, New Delhi, launched a revised online portal in 2023, through which birth and death certificates are being processed online in the state. Thus, online issuance of every birth and death certificate has been made mandatory in Chhattisgarh.

It is noteworthy that the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1969 was amended in 2023. According to the amendment, the birth certificate will be the only valid basis for proving the date of birth for children born after October 2023. This means that for children born before this date, other alternative documents will also be valid as proof of date of birth.

However, for children born after October 2023, the birth certificate will be the sole source of proof, the officials said.

Only birth certificates issued online are valid for every child born in the state after April 2023.

It is clarified that birth certificates are not mandatory for verifying the date of birth of children born before October 2023. Other documents are also valid for them. However, for children born after October 2023, the birth certificate will be the sole basis for proof of birth.

For children whose birth certificates were previously issued manually, the portal now also provides for the creation of online certificates. This will enable the preservation of old certificates in digital format.

Sources said it has come to light that in some districts, Aadhaar cards are being issued only on the basis of birth certificates containing QR codes. Upon learning of this issue, the State Government has requested the Assistant Manager, UIDAI, Hyderabad, to issue appropriate guidelines to all Aadhaar centers in the state.

It is also noteworthy that after the launch of the revised portal in 2023, some technical difficulties were encountered in the initial phase, which were resolved by the Office of the Registrar General of India, New Delhi. All Registrars (Births and Deaths) in the state have been provided with the necessary training regarding the new portal. Regular training programmes are also being conducted at the district level as needed, ensuring the smooth functioning of the online certificate issuance process.

Officials stated that since April 2023, all birth certificates in the state have been issued exclusively through the online portal, and the portal is currently operating completely technically smoothly.
