CEC Gopalaswami to review poll preparedness on Oct 24

Raipur, October 21, 2008: Amid major Maoists strike killing 12 CRPF men in Chhattisgarh yesterday, the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami is coming to the state to review the election preparedness and security arrangements for the two phase assembly election of the state.

Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners Navin B Chawla and S Y Qureshi would review the poll works on October 24 and the next day they would leave for Delhi, Election Commission sources said here today.

During their stay, the Election Commission would specifically review the security blue print of the state administration for the election after 12 CRPF personnel were ambushed and killed by the Maoists in Bijapur district besides injuring six yesterday, Commission sources told the ChhattisgarhTopNews.Com.

During the 2003 Assembly election and 2004 Parliamentary votes several naxal strongholds, including Dantewada, Sarguja and Rajnandgaon areas, had been converted into battle fields between both the Maoists and the security forces.

This time the situation would be more intensified, the sources said adding the latest situation would be reviewed by the Commission in the presence of the civil, police and intelligence officials.

As per the review meeting and subsequent suggestions the armed forces would be deployed, the officials said adding all data are being collected for the meeting.
