Maoist Narayan Sanyal gets bail from Supreme Court

New Delhi, May 07, 2012: The Supreme Court today granted bail to a senior Maoist leader Narayan Sanyal, who is currently lodged in a Jharkhand jail.

The apex court granted bail and also suspended the life sentence of Sanyal, who was held guilty of committing sedition along with Binayak Sen by a Raipur court in Chhattisgarh in December 2010.

A bench of justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhayay ordered the release of the 78-year-old Sanyal, considering his age and the fact that he has already spent over six years in jail since his arrest in 2006.

"Keeping in view the age of Sanyal, who is 78-years-old and has been in jail for over six years, we are granting him bail. Accordingly, his sentence will also remain suspended," the bench said asking him to furnish a personal bond of Rs one lakh before the concerned trial court which would impose other conditions to its satisfaction for his release.

Sanyal was convicted along with Sen and a Kolkata-based businessman Piyush Guha for colluding with the Maoists in expanding their network to fight the state.

Sanyal has been made accused in other cases, including jail break incident, out side Chhattisgarh and is currently lodged in a Jharkhand jail.

Earlier, Sen was granted bail and his sentence was suspended by the apex court on April 15 last year.
