2 Year Extension to Kharun Project



New Delhi, February 11, 2013: The Planning Commission has agreed for two year extension to Kharun Irrigation Project of Chhattisgarh, official sources said today.

The Planning Commission has agreed for the extension of time period by two years for Kharun (Extension, Renovation and Modernization, ERM) Irrigation Project, official sources said.

This irrigation project, which has been carried out under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP), would be completed without any increase in the cost of the project for which investment clearance has already been accorded, official sources said.

The project would be completed in the financial year 2013-14 and Plan accounts would be closed by 31st March 2014, according to the new time schedule.

Project may accordingly be executed as per the approved outlays in the State Annual Plans, it added.

The State Finance Department has been asked to restrict the expenditure to the approved cost and no additional expenditure beyond approved cost would be permitted unless the revised estimate is got approved following the prescribed procedure, the officials said.

The AIBP was conceived in the year 1996 by the Government of India in order to provide financial assistance to States to complete various ongoing projects in the country, so that envisaged irrigation potential of the project could be created and thereby extend irrigation to more areas.
