Gadchiroli, February 18, 2014: At least seven maoists, including a senior Commander, were killed in Maharashtra, close to Chhattisgarh border, a senior police officer said today.

"After an exchange of fire, police has recovered bodies of seven Maoists near Betkathi village" Gadchiroli District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Suvez Haque told ChhattisgarhTopNews.Com.

On a tip off police were on an operation in the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border, when the incident took place at about 11.30 PM last night near Betkathi village, Haque said today.

The incident took place in Betkathi jungle of Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra state. Maoists are active in Gadchiroli district, bordering Chhattisgarh, for nearly two decades.

Narrating the incident the District Police Chief said "the joint police party of Gadchiroli and Gondia districts was on an operation when the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on the forces. In the exchange of fire seven Maoists were killed."

"All the seven bodies of the Maoists have been recovered with seven weapons," he said adding police forces have received minor injuries in the incident.

"Since a Kalashnikov weapon of AK-47 series and a carbine, two self loading rifles (SLR) among others have been recovered from the Maoists, police is sure one of them is a Divisional Commander," Haque said.

When asked how he was sure one of them is a Divisional Commander of the Maoist, the SP explained "divisional Commanders carry AK-47 series weapons and police has identified one of them as the Divisional Commander and others identities are being established".

"But surely this is a great achievement for the Police forces as Maoists have been involved in several violent activities in the Gadchiroli area for many years," the police officer said.
