Bilaspur, November 11, 2014: At least eight women are dead and 64 hospitalized after they underwent sterilization operation in a government organized camp in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, a top official said today.

"Eight women have died after Saturday sterilization camp in Sakri village," Commissioner of Bilaspur Sonmani Borah said.

After visiting the villages and hospitals, Borah, the senior most administrative officer of the region said, government sponsored sterilization camp was organized on Saturday for Sakri and Pendari villages at Sakri of Bilaspur district.

"Reports of drop in pulses, vomiting and other ailments have started pouring in from yesterday among the women, who underwent surgery for family planning operation," the senior Officer said.

"Since yesterday eight women have died and 64 are admitted in various hospitals of Bilaspur," Borah said.

"Of the admitted patients, many are in critical condition and best of health services are being provided to all the patients to check the number of casualty," he said.

To a question, why so many women have died in a shorter span after the operation, Borah said "a high level team of expert doctors will probe the cause of the death as per the order of the state government".

However, local officials and local journalists suspect spurious medicines might be the cause of incident.

"Suspected fake medicines used for operation and post operation might be the reason of so many deaths," said a local journalist Bishal Jha, who had interacted with the villagers and doctors after the incident.
