Police case against Doctor, team for death in Sterilization case

Bilaspur, November 12, 2014: Police case has been registered against a doctor and his team following several women died after a sterilization camp in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, police said.

"Police has registered a case against Doctor R K Gupta and his team in the sterilization case," Bilaspur district Superintendent of Police Badri Narayan Meena said.

"The Case has been registered against the team under section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code, for causing death due to negligence, not amounting to culpable homicide," the SP said.

"The police case is against the doctor and others," he said explaining after the investigation it would only be revealed "who the others are".

The statement of the police chief suggested that the police would not arrest anyone at this juncture. They would go for a detailed inquiry before any arrest.

"We will also take into account the report of the post mortem and blood sample before taking any concrete action on the matter," Meena said.

Meanwhile, unofficial sources said 13 women have died after the sterilization operation in Sakri village on Saturday last and many are in serious condition.

However, Commissioner of Bilaspur Division Sonmani Borah said "the death toll is only 11."

Meanwhile, a team of seven doctors from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi have arrived at Bilaspur to carry out intensive case of the patients.

The team of expert doctors have reached today from Delhi, who will advise the local doctors on the treatment of patients, Borah said.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday spoke to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh over phone on the matter and followed by a discussion with the Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, a special plane ferried the team of doctors from Delhi to Bilaspur this morning for assistance.
