New Delhi, April 3, 2025: After the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (amendment) Bill, the Centre today tabled the bill in the Rajya Sabha and sought the support of the opposition.
The proposed legislation is not against Muslims or intended to hurt their religious feelings, but seeks to improve the functioning of Waqf properties and ensure transparency, the government asserted.
After nearly 12 hours of debate, Lok Sabha passed the Bill with a 288-232 vote in the wee hours today.
Tabling the Bill in the Upper House Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the proposed legislation has nothing to do with religion, but deals only with properties, reports said.

The government proposes to rename the Waqf Bill as Unified Waqf Management Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Bill, the reports added.
TheWaqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 aims to streamline the management of Waqf properties, with provisions to safeguard heritage sites and promote social welfare, sources said.
