On December 14, 2024 Chhattisgarh Assembly completed 24 glorious years as on this day in the year 2000 the Assembly had its first ever session after Chhattisgarh was carved out from Madhya Pradesh and made a new state.

Chhattisgarh was created on November 1, 2000 and with that the new assembly was also formed with 90 elected members and one nominated member, taking the total number of MLAs to 91 in the year 2000.

However the first ever session of the Chhattisgarh Assembly was on December 14, 2000.

Since the assembly was not having its own building, the first ever sitting of the Chhattisgarh assembly was conducted on December 14, 2000 at the ‘Jashpur Hall’ of the Raj Kumar College, Raipur.

However, after converted a government building into Assembly Hall at the Zero Point on Balodabazar road, the second session of the Chhattisgarh Assembly took place on February 27, 2001.

The current Assembly premises is spread over 55 acre of land in village Barounda.

A new Assembly building is being constructed at the new Raipur, near the state secretariat with all modern facilities.

Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh had earlier stated that the silver jubilee of the Assembly should be in the Nava Raipur building of the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha, for which works are undergoing in a high pace.

Chhattisgarh assembly has earned a special place in the history of parliamentary democracy.

It has made a rule, any one entering the well of the house, will automatically be suspended and the Speaker/Chair will decide the tenure of the suspension of the member.

It also has a distinction that the state assembly has never used marshal to remove any members from the house for unruly or undemocratic behaviour.

The state assembly has also not yet used guillotine to pass any bill.

In a unique decision the assembly had a close doors discussion on the Maoists issue confronting the state for the last several decades, when Dr Raman Singh was the Chief Minister. During the discussion not a single member from media was even allowed to witness the proceedings, forget about the common visitors.

However, the number of sittings are gradually shrinking in Chhattisgarh Assembly, might be influenced from other houses. It was initially decided to have 120 days of sessions in a year that has been reduced to less than 60 days of discussions. The members, and especially the government should encourage discussions on all the issues being faced by the people of the state.
