Raipur, February 11, 2024: BJP central leadership today picked up a lesser known leader as nominee for the Rajya Sabha as the tenure of high profile Saroj Pandey ending next month.
“Raja Devendra Pratap Singh” is named today as the BJP Rajya Sabha candidate from Chhattisgarh, a party release said.
Singh is made the candidate for the lone seat as the tenure of Saroj Pandey is ending soon.
Initially there was confusion about the details of Singh. However, Chhattisgarh BJP subsequently came out with details of the candidate and dismissed some speculation that he was from Uttar Pradesh.
Kumar Devendra Pratap Singh is the grandson of Raigarh King Chakradhar Singh, who lives in Lailunga of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh.
He is a Zilla Panchayat member from Lailunga and member of Railway Hindi Advisory committee of the Rail Ministry, sources said.
The tenure of senior BJP leader Saroj Pandey will be over by April 2, 2024.
As per the notification for the Rajya Sabha election for one seat from Chhattisgarh, the last date of nomination is February 15, 2024. The scrutiny is on February 16 and the last date of withdrawal is February 20. The Election Commission has fixed February 27 as the date of vote for the single seat from Chhattisgarh, for which BJP has declared Devendra Pratap Singh as its candidate, whereas Congress is yet to name any.
