Raipur, August 14, 2026: Addressing the state-level event for ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ in the capital, Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy of Partition and saluted the struggle, courage, and resilience of the families who endured the agony of displacement.
Chief Minister Sai stated that history is not merely a record of past events but also a source of lessons to guide the present and secure the future. Therefore, it is essential to keep the memory of the horrors of Partition, and the lessons learned from them, alive across generations. The pain of Partition conveys a message to us to preserve the nation’s unity, integrity, and social harmony intact under all circumstances.
Sai remarked that the Partition of the country in 1947 was not just a division of land and borders; this tragedy forced millions of people to part ways with their homelands, homes, and loved ones. Millions of families from various communities, including the Bengali, Sikh, and Sindhi societies, endured the unbearable pain of displacement. While most of those who witnessed the horrors of that era firsthand are no longer among us, that pain remains alive in the memories of their families and future generations.
He noted that those displaced by Partition faced extremely difficult circumstances. Leaving everything behind, they started their lives almost from scratch in new locations. Through tireless hard work, determination, and resilience, they re-established themselves and made significant contributions to the development of the nation and society. Their struggle and courage serve as an inspiration for future generations.
The Chief Minister stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to observe August 14 as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to honour the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the tragedy of Partition and the struggles of families who endured the agony of displacement, as well as to acquaint the new generation with this chapter of history.
This day is not merely an occasion to recall the pain of the past, but also an opportunity to draw lessons from that tragedy and further strengthen our resolve regarding the nation’s unity and integrity, he said.
On the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Chief Minister Sai also participated in a silent procession held from the Directorate of Archaeology to Ambedkar Chowk.
Through the silent procession, tributes were paid to those who lost their lives in the Partition tragedy, and condolences were expressed to the millions of families who suffered the trauma of displacement and Partition. A large number of public representatives, prominent citizens, representatives from various communities, and students participated in the silent procession to commemorate the horrors of Partition.
