     Raipur, June 16, 2024: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai today directed the health department to organise sickle cell awareness camps among tribal population of the state.

     “On instruction from the Chief Minister the Health Department will organise sickle cell awareness camps in tribal areas on June 19,” Health Department sources said today.

     On the world Sickle Cell Day the camps would be organised throughout the state, the sources added.

     Including in health centres, all camps will have facilities of screening and awareness of the sickle cell.

     Camps will also be organised at gram Panchayats and tribal schools for the screening and awareness.

     Official sources said, out of the screened 1.11 lakh people, 2 lakh 90 thousand and 663 carrier were found spread over 33 districts of the state, and 22,672 were found having sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disease which affects the whole life of the affected patient.

     It is more common in the tribal population of India but occurs in non-tribals too.

     The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1, 2023 at Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh.

  The programme is being carried out in a mission mode for screening, prevention, and management of sickle cell anaemia in all tribal and other high prevalent areas of States and union territories of India.

     The focus is on 278 districts of 17 states with higher prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease like, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Uttarakhand.
