Bhubaneswar, June 12, 2024: Creating history senior tribal leader Mohan Charan Majhi today took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of Odisha.
Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida were also sworn in as the Deputy Chief Ministers by the Governor Raghubar Das in a function held at Janata Maidan here in the capital city of Odisha.
Along with the Chief Minister and two deputy Chief Ministers, eight ministers and five ministers of state (independent charge) also took oath today.
Suresh Pujari, Rabi Narayan Naik, Nityananda Gond, and Krushna Chandra Patra took oath as cabinet ministers.
Pruthwiraj Harichandan, son of Chhattisgarh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan, took oath as a cabinet minister.
Mukesh Mahaling, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and Krushna Chandra Mohapatra also took oath as Cabinet ministers.
Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Suryabanshi Suraj, Pradeep Balasananta, Gokula Nanda Mallick and Sampad Kumar Swain were sworn in as ministers of state (independent charge).
The 52 year Majhi and a Santali tribe is an MLA from Keonjhar for 4-times, who was yesterday elected as the leader of the Odisha BJP legislature party leader.
Beginning his career as a sarpanch from 1997-2000, Majhi was elected to the state assembly for the first time in 2000 from Keonjhar. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2019. In 2024 election, Majhi retained the Keonjhar seat by defeating BJD’s Mina Majhi by 11,577 votes.
Among the 78 BJP MLAs elected to the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly, only five are women.
In the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah the Majhi cabinet took oath of office and secrecy. The outgoing Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was also present in the function. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Patnaik was chief minister of Odisha for 24 years.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Chief Ministers from Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh, Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, Nayab Singh Saini from Haryana, Pushkar Singh Dhami of Uttarakhand, Bhupendra Patel from Gujarat and Manik Saha of Tripura were also present in the oath ceremony.
