Raipur, April 11, 2013: The National Human Rights Commission today expressed concern over the alleged fake encounter in Chhattisgarh and awarded compensation in many of the cases.
A high level NHRC delegation, led by its Chairman Justice K G Balkrishnan, today conducted hearing at Raipur in 27 cases relating to the state, official sources said.
Although police had claimed to have killed Maoists in encounters, but the NHRC delegation had found many of them fake, and awarded compensation to the families of the victims, the sources said.
“The Commission took up 27 cases for hearing in the full commission and division bench sittings and recommended about Rs 20 lakh as monetary relief in different cases of human rights violations,” the sources said.
In the case of 7000 hysterectomies-uterus removal surgeries had been carried out by unscrupulous doctors in 169 hospitals in Chhattisgarh to claim money under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, the NHRC asked the Chief Secretary to conduct checking to confirm whether such things had happened in other districts of the state and submit a status report in four weeks time.
The Commission had also taken up the matter of gang rape of 11 minor tribal girls by a teacher and a watchman in a government tribal hostel in Narharpur block of Kanker district and another gang rape case in Amadula tribal hostel in Balod district.
In some cases, the Commission Chairman had asked the Director General of Police Ram Niwas and Chief Secretary Sunil Kumar to conduct thorough probes.
Besides Chief Secretary and DGP, Principal Secretary Home N K Aswal and other officials were also present during the hearing.
Earlier a team from NHRC had also visited various places of Dantewada district and interacted with the people, affected by Police or Maoists and also met Soni Sori in Jagdalpur Jail. A tribal teacher Sori is arrested by Chhattisgarh Police for her alleged links with the Maoists.
