Raipur, January 17, 2025: A tripartite MoU was signed today between Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority, GAIL India Limited, Bharat Petroleum and 6 municipal corporations of the state for the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste.

On the occasion of the conclusion of the tripartite MoU, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai said, Chhattisgarh has taken a big initiative towards achieving the goal of clean environment and net zero emission.
The Chief Minister congratulated all the institutions for this special MoU and said that this step will give Chhattisgarh a new identity in the field of cleanliness, energy production and sustainable development.
Under the Sustainable Scheme in Chhattisgarh, the state is moving rapidly towards the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste. It is noteworthy that there are immense possibilities of producing biofuels such as compressed biogas (CBG) from urban solid waste under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation scheme in Chhattisgarh, Sai said.
In this sequence, due to the continuous efforts of Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), a tripartite MoU was signed today with CBDA, GAIL and BPCL for setting up compressed biogas plants from urban solid waste in Municipal Corporations Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari.
Among these, an agreement was signed between Municipal Corporations Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba and CBDA and GAIL India Limited and between Municipal Corporations Bilaspur, Dhamtari, Rajnandgaon and CBDA and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Key features of the project: Through this MoU, about 350 tons of municipal solid waste per day and about 500 tons of surplus biomass of 6 municipal corporations will be used for biofuel production.
These 06 plants will produce about 70 tons of compressed biogas per day. An investment of about Rs 600 crore in these projects will be made entirely by GAIL and BPCL.
Similarly, the state will receive GST of about Rs 6 crore per year from the production and sale from the plants.
As a result of the MoU, organic farming will be promoted from the co-product generated from the establishment of the plants. Effective disposal of waste will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and Chhattisgarh will move towards achieving net zero emission.
During the MoU, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Subodh Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Chief Minister P Dayanand, Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr Basavaraju S, GAIL India, BPCL, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority and officials of 06 urban bodies were present.
