Korba, October 30, 2011: A Government of India employee and his wife allegedly committed suicide here in Korba district of Chhattisgarh for alleged police atrocities on his son.
Pokhram Patel, an employee of the South Eastern Coalfield Limited and a resident of Deepka Colony, about 22 km from the district headquarters Korba, allegedly committed suicide along with his wife Savitri Patel yesterday after his sons were subjected to police atrocities after a theft case reported in a nearby Mosque.
On suspicion, initially Amit Patel was taken to police station for interrogation and subsequently his younger brother Asish Patel was also taken to police station and tortured, alleged local residents, who had also gheraod the police station demanding action against the police personnel, responsible for the incident.
The residents also complaint that the younger brother was at Jabalpur, where he was studying, when the alleged theft took place and he had no connection with the theft case.
After people expressed their strong displeasure over the mishandling of the incident by the Korba District Superintendent of Police Sundarraj P, Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh intervened in to the matter and directed the District Collector R P S Tyagi to conduct a thorough probe into the incident.
The Chief Minister today also termed the suicide as unfortunate.
