     Balod, January 10, 2012: Creation of nine new districts would speed up development works and improve the condition of the people, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh today said formally inaugurating the new district of Balod.

     Chhattisgarh was created by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and today the state was competing with many developed states on many issues, Singh told an impressive gathering here after a road show.

     Similarly new districts, including Balod, would speed up the process of development in the state and help the people in resolving their problems, he said.

     Balod had been carved out from Durg district and it started functioning from January 01, 2012, but it was formally inaugurated today by the Chief Minister in the presence of a hold of ministers and people’s representatives.

     The Chief Minister also announced converting Gunderdehi as a Sub Division from Tehsil.

     In  the year 1956 local leader Lal Shyam Shah had demanded creation of Balod as a district before the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and today that dream came true, he said adding the new district was full of opportunity.

     The new Balod district is created comprising of 687 revenue villages and 16 forest villages. Dondi, Gurur, Dondilohara, Balod and Gunderdehi are the five tehsils spread over 393 gram panchayats and 8 urban local bodies or 2.78 lakh hectare areas, officials said.
