Rajnandgaon, January 02, 2025: Chhattisgarh officials have confirmed today the presence of uranium in the water sources of multiple villages in Rajnandgaon district of the state.
Information was received about the presence of uranium in the water sources of village Raka of Dongargarh block of the district and village Bori of Rajnandgaon block, Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Section Rajnandgaon Sameer Sharma has said.
In view of this, in the presence of senior chemist Parimal Dutta, water samples were collected from the water sources of various villages of the district and the test of uranium in water was done at the State Level Water Testing Laboratory and Research Center Raipur of the Public Health Engineering Department.
Water samples were tested with the latest advanced technology based Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) machine. This machine mainly has the facility to test all heavy metals and uranium.
According to the World Health Organisation, the maximum acceptable amount of uranium in drinking water is 0.03 milligrams per litre.
After testing, the amount of uranium in the water sample was found to be much less than 0.03 milligrams per liter, which is within the prescribed standard limit.
Sharma said that if the maximum acceptable amount of uranium in drinking water is more than 0.03 milligrams per liter, then there is a possibility of a person getting kidney related diseases if consume such water.
