Raipur, September 11, 2025: At least 10 Maoists, including one top commander, were killed today in a fierce gun battle in a forestry area of eastern part of Chhattisgarh, a top Police officer said.
“In an intelligence based operation, security forces have killed at least 10 Maoists in Odisha-Chhattisgarh border area in Gariyaband district,” a top police officer told ChhattisgarhTopNews.Com.
Among the killed are the Odisha in charge of Maoist organization Modem Balkrishna, who is also known by many other names.
Balkrishna is a Central Committee member of the Maoist Organisation CPI (Maoist) and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head, the top officer said.
Along with Balkrishna another Maoist Commander named Pramod, who was carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh and is a Zonal Committee member of the Maoists, was also killed in the encounter, he said.
The fierce encounter took place in the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border in Bhaludiggi hill in Mainpur area of Gariyaband district.
Meanwhile Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the joint forces of Central Para Military Force’s Cobra Commando, Chhattisgarh Police and District Reserve Guard saying “Our security forces have achieved another major success against Naxalites”.
“The remaining Naxalites should also surrender in time. Complete destruction of red terror is certain before the upcoming 31st March,” Shah said in X, referring to the plan of the Central government to free Maoists from the country by March 31, 2026.
Talking about the operation, the officer said they had specific intelligence input about the movement of the powerful Central Committee member, who is mandated to expand the organisation to new areas since there is tremendous pressure on the Maoists from the forces in Bastar area, located in south of Chhattisgarh.
Model Balkrishna was although the head of organization in Odisha, but also working in the border district of Chhattisgarh like Gariyaband and Dhamtari to expand the organization, so that they could have a better hold on the ground. “We had intelligence inputs of his functioning and we were tracking him and ultimately was killed,” the police officer said.
After Chalpati, another Central Committee member who was having a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head, was killed in the same area in January last, Balkrishna was trying to expand the network of Maoists in that area, the top police officer said adding his elimination will give a severe jolt to the Maoist party.
Under the General Secretary there are Polit Bureau (politburo), the policy decision making body. To implement that policies, there is a setup of Central Committee members. Currently there are 13 Central Committee (CC) members alive in the Maoists organisation.
Among the 13 CC members currently Jharkhand has 2, Odisha is left with one, Telangana has one, and 9 are deployed in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, of which 4 are active and 5 are inactive, another officer said.
