Raipur, December 31, 2025: In a road safety meeting organized by the Chhattisgarh government, it was informed that more accidents are occurring in rural areas than in urban areas between 3 PM and 9 PM in the state.

In the state level review meeting, it was noted that the main reason for the highest number of deaths in these accidents is two-wheeler riders or passengers riding without helmets.

Instructions were given to review the causes of accidents in Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Korba, Raigarh, Balodabazar, Sarguja, and Bastar districts, which account for the highest number of road accidents, deaths, and injuries in the state, and to prepare an action plan for effective control.

Sanjay Sharma, Chairman of the Inter-Departmental Lead Agency (Road Safety) and a  Police Officer, informed that the police department has taken action in 8,15,954 cases against traffic rule violators, collecting Rs. 33,22,39,300 in fines, and the transport department has collected Rs. 38.52 crore in compounding fees.

Transport Secretary S. Prakash directed that necessary improvements should be made within the stipulated time frame as per the suggestions given by the inspection committee at the black spots.

Prakash also said that an analysis should be done to determine how much the accidents have decreased after the corrective measures at the black spots. He added that instead of making improvements after the black spots are identified, it would be better to ensure that the road design is correct from the beginning.

Sanjay Sharma presented information on the work done by the concerned departments and the current status, stating that out of the 152 identified black spots, improvement work has been completed in 102, and instructions have been given to carry out corrective measures in the remaining 50 black spots soon.

In the state security scenario review meeting, Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary Vikas Sheel instructed all concerned department officials to work in coordination with each other to improve road safety and prevent road accidents.

The Chief Secretary also instructed health department officials to ensure that 108 ambulances reach accident sites on time. He has also directed senior health department officials to monitor this.

He further stated that trauma centers should be strengthened to provide proper treatment to those injured in accidents. Instructions were also given to ensure maximum participation of young people in road safety and proactive traffic management initiatives.

The Chief Secretary has directed all District Collectors to take steps to prevent road accidents, continuously monitor road safety, and hold meetings of the District Road Safety Committee.

At the beginning of the review meeting, Transport Secretary S. Prakash provided a detailed overview of the department’s initial activities.
