Raipur, August 02, 2026: Amidst allegations of inflated electricity bills linked to smart metres, the Chhattisgarh government today stated that an analysis of official electricity consumption data for the Raipur city region, covering June and July 2026, reveals a significant decline in power consumption during July.
It was noted that total electricity consumption stood at 131.27 million units (MU) in June 2026, dropping to 89.38 million units in July. Thus, a 31.91 per cent reduction in electricity consumption was recorded over the course of a single month, state government said today.
Official figures indicate a decrease in both the number of consumers and the volume of consumption across all high-usage categories. A 64.23 per cent drop was recorded in the number of consumers using over 600 units of electricity, accompanied by a 38.13 per cent reduction in their total consumption.
Similarly, in the 401–600 unit category, the number of consumers fell by 33.99 per cent, and electricity consumption decreased by 32.58 per cent.
The government stated that the analysis also highlights the positive impact of the state administration’s ‘Half Electricity Bill’ scheme on consumer usage patterns. The number of consumers using up to 400 units rose from 196,777 in June to 256,471 in July—an increase of 30.34 per cent. Conversely, the number of consumers using more than 400 units dropped from 120,615 to 60,921, representing a decline of approximately 50 per cent.
This suggests that a large number of consumers made an effort to keep their electricity consumption within the 400-unit limit to avail the benefits of the government’s relief scheme, the state government said.
According to the data, the number of consumers in the 0–100 unit category has increased by 53.12 per cent, and in the 101–200 unit category, it has risen by 51.79 per cent. Experts believe that the end of the summer season, the reduced use of electrical appliances like air conditioners and coolers, and growing awareness regarding energy conservation have positively contributed to the decline in electricity consumption.
Officials from the Energy Department state that official data for the Raipur city region clearly indicates a drop in electricity demand during July, with consumers successfully managing their power usage.
An analysis of the available data reveals that this shift in electricity consumption is primarily the result of seasonal conditions, a trend towards energy conservation, and the impact of the state government’s public welfare schemes.
The analysis of official data also shows that a large number of consumers have now moved into the ‘up to 400 units’ category, thereby benefiting from the government’s relief schemes.
The government has asserted that the available facts and figures do not substantiate the various misconceptions circulating about smart meters.
