     Raipur, January 11, 2012: Creation of Gariaband as a new district would help in eradicating backwardness of the region and added a new chapter of development to the tribal region, Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh said today.

     After formally inaugurating Gariaband as a new district, Singh told a function at Gariaband that the separate revenue unit would bring prosperity among people.

     Gariaband is rich in diamond and other natural resources and its creation as a new district would help in eradicate backwardness and poverty and speed up the process of development, he said.

     The new district was carved out from old Raipur district and comprising of 690 villages and 306 gram panchayats spread over 4220 sq km area, out of which 2860 Sq Km or 67 per cent are forest cover and 1360 Sq Km revenue area.

     Having a population of 5,75,480, Gariaband district was created comprising five tehsils namely Phingeswar (Rajim), Gariaband, Chhura, Mainpur and Deobhog. It has also four urban local bodies (Nagar Panchayats) namely Gariaband, Chhura, Phingeswar and Rajim.

     The district has also 13,459 primitive Kamar tribes and only 3,645 primitive Bhunjia tribes.
