Raipur, May 30, 2024: The Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of Northeast India, the Indian Meteorological Department said today.
Prevailing heat wave to severe heat wave conditions over Northwest & Central India likely to reduce gradually from today with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to continue over Northeast India during next 4-5 days, the IMD said.
Spurred on by Cyclone Remal, southwest monsoon is expected to hit the Kerala coast and parts of northeast from today, a day ahead of the date forecast by the weather office.
The normal monsoon onset date for Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam is June 5. But the conditions also continue to become favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of South Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives, Comorin, Lakshadweep, southwest and central Bay of Bengal, northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of North-eastern states during the same period, the Weathermen said.
The IMD had on May 15 announced the onset of monsoon over Kerala by May 31. Cyclone Remal, which ripped through West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, had pulled the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which could be one of the reasons for early onset over the north-east.
Kerala is experiencing heavy rain fall for the past few days resulting in a surplus May rainfall quota.
If after 10th May, 60 per cent of the available 14 stations enlisted like Minicoy, Amini, Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Kollam, Allapuzha, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur, Kudulu and Mangalore report rainfall of 2.5 mm or more for two consecutive days, the onset over Kerala be declared on the 2nd day, along with couple of other conditions like the Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) is low, and the direction of the winds is south-westerly.
Most part of India and especially more than half of net cultivated area depends on monsoon for cultivation looking into the mono crop pattern. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.
